This blog is only for St. A's 1965 grads and any former classmates who chooses to contribute. I will maintain the blog. I'll allow others to contribute as authors if they wish. Its purpose is to reminisce over our three years together. I'm hoping one person's memory will stimulate the rest of us to remember other things and comment on them. If we continue after the reunion, we can reflect on the events of the three days. After that, the sky's the limit.

Reunion Weekend
I had high hopes going into the weekend that the reunion would be all I wanted it to be. I never liked the one high school reunion I went to. Maybe the difference was that we lived together at St. A's for three years, because it was great to see everyone. I felt everyone was genuinely happy to reunite. There were no pretentious behavior about what anyone did or didn't do in their lives. It was all about the reunion. Some of the spouses attended and took pictures.
The first meeting was Friday night for dinner at the Pizza Ranch in Bettendorf. They had a Regular food buffet plus the Pizza buffet which made me happy. But they had a Dessert pizza bar and I tried all but one, only because it wasn't available till on my way out. My bad, not good for my Diabetes at all but oh so good.
Every one was so welcoming. Hugs were everywhere. We had on name tags with first names, but probably should have put maiden name also. I'll share a senior moment of my own. Sheryl and I hugged and talked for a while. Then I went to rejoin Susie Fritz Valley and got ahold of someones copy of the booklet and figured out who Sheryl was. I was going Sheryl who??? (Sheryl Truman Neuman).
Everyone was there the first night except DiAnn Althaus Rooney, who missed a plane connection. We felt so sorry for her since she had done so much work for the reunion. The reunion booklet was quite the keepsake. DiAnn and I came from California and Mary Saunders Kelley came from Boston and everyone else was in between.
The evening was very informal. We all moved around frequently to talk with someone new.
Some of us met again at the Airport Best Western, Susie and I, Carolyn Edwards Bellner and her husband, Lee Thompson Tressell, Phyllis Nestor Pate, --------------, and DiAnn Althaus. Susie and I found Lee, Phyllis and -------waiting in the lobby for DiAnn to arrive. While there some other nurses from the Moline hospital came in and we talked to them about others we knew in their class. We ran into the Moline nurses on more then one occasion.
They served a breakfast in the lobby so we ate together. Saturday just spontaneously happened but on Sunday we planned to meet for Breakfast before Church. Then we left together to go to the old hospital.
The second meeting was Saturday at 11AM at Biaggi's in Davenport. It was the memory luncheon. When we entered there was a Memorial to the deceased. There was a photo with the four of them and candles. As you will recall the four were Sue Brandt Benson, Monica Gordon McCormick, Meg Weaver Hanson and Donna Wolfong. I took lots of photos at the memory lunch and after working with the blog will post pictures on Pinterest for all interested parties to review pictures of persons and memorabilia. Next to the Memorial was a cake with the picture of everyone in our graduation outfits. Some of the memorabilia: a blazer with the school badge, a beanie, a graduation announcement, some mother/father/daughter pictures, a commencement bulletin, a school bell, some news letters, RN hat with stripe and pin, and school pin were enjoyed by all. We had Trivia questions and sang the school song. If I can get any committee members on the blog, maybe we can post the questions. After lunch, we went to rest for the evening banquet.
The evening banquet was held at the Pinnacle Country Club in Milan. Trinity College really did a great job with the program. Their IT Department prepared a presentation of pictures from the three schools. There were some great shots from St. A's. The three different videos replayed continuously through dinner. When the presentations started they did each school separatley. When they called our name they showed our graduation picture, we stood and received our gift which was a crystal paperweight shaped like a diamond for 50 years. At the end of the presentation, they mentioned deceased members. Trinty has a honor guard for deceased nurses. They were dressed in capes, white dresses and hoses and caps. They stood at attention and we honored lost ones. It was very classy.
Before you knew it the night was over. Neded sleep to get up and going on Sunday.

Embarrassing Moments
It was in our first year during the winter. I'll describe the environment. There was tons of snow out there. The steam heat was pouring out. The windows were all frozen over. It was as hot as you know what in the room. Both of the patients were smoking cigars. My patient had a recent colostomy surgery. The stench in the room was unbelievable. All not a good environment, especially for a first year student. I remember stating to get dizzy. Instead of sitting down, which we probably weren't allowed to do in those days, I started for the door. I came to on the floor. Marion Wacek came in with a wheelchair, one of the big old wooden ones, and took me away. I think those old chair backs went almost flat, like a gurney. The next thing I remember was being in bed in the dorm, being observed for a concussion. I was so embarrassed I was going to quit. Well I managed to swallow my embarrassment and with Marion's encouragement, stayed at St. A's.
In my senior year a doctor was showing for several of us students. He had us gathered around the bed. The patient apparently had a huge abdominal abscess. There was a small opening in his incision. the doctor had a huge, to me, pair of nursing scissors. Looking at a ruler, I would guess, 9-10 inches. At the bend in the scissors, it had to be several inches wide. He inserted the scissors into the separation and twirled the scissors around to show how big the abscess was. I managed to get to the hallway, where I slide down the wall to the floor. I didn't get hurt. But it could be said, I fainted my way through school.
We all have to have funny stories to share. Please tell us your story.

Why I Became A Nurse
From my earliest recollections I wanted to be a Baby Nurse. Its all I really ever wanted to do. Of course when I graduated from high school, my father gave me three options: be a nurse, be a teacher, or be a secretary. And then I had to pay for it. I was the oldest of five and we weren't rich. I started working at a Woolworth store at sixteen years old. Then went to a Rexall Drug Store. I worked there every Sunday the first year of training. I picked St. A's because it was close to home and it was cheap. I tell every one I got my RN for $250/$300. I think we paid $250 on admission and $50 for Mercyville. I took the work for a year scholarship at St. A's and that was it. I remember someone from training stated that they hoped I liked OB as much as I thought I would. I spent my entire career in OB as you will see in DiAnn's booklet she is putting together.
I included something that showed up on Face book today. It actually predates us. Thank the Heavens we didn't have long sleeves but it looks like the heavy duty weight starched cotton. We also had a Navy blue blazer but I sure wish we had a cape. They were so cool. Didn't we have a yellow stripe till we were a Rn's. Were we capped at the end of the first year? I know we didn't have hats when we first got our uniforms.
Boy, this is a learning curve.I spent hours today figuring out how to download the picture. Then I lost the post. Gave up and went to take a nap. A friend called and we went to dinner. I re watched a
You Tube set up video and found my post. I spent $60 on blogging books and am reading them most of the time. I'm also using You Tube videos and joined Pro Blogger. I haven't had this much fun since I got my degree. I love to learn new things.
